Da Nang dental recovery guide: what to do between appointments

What to do in Da Nang between dental appointments — beaches, Hoi An day trips, Ba Na Hills, Marble Mountains, and practical recovery tips for Australian patients.

Da Nang is Vietnam's best dental tourism base because the 5–8 days of free time during veneer lab fabrication — or the recovery days after implant placement — can be spent comfortably at the beach, on day trips to Hoi An, or exploring the city at a relaxed pace. This guide covers what to do, when you can do it, and what to avoid.

Da Nang activity guide

My Khe Beach

Da Nang’s main beach stretches 30km. The central My Khe section (near the clinic) is:

  • White sand, calm water, safe for swimming
  • Beach chairs available for AUD 2–3 per session
  • Fresh seafood restaurants along the beachfront: grilled prawns, steamed fish (soft, ideal for recovery)
  • 10 minutes by Grab from Picasso Đống Đa

Best time of day: early morning (6–9am) or late afternoon (4–6pm) — midday sun is intense from April to August.

Hoi An Ancient Town (45 mins by Grab)

UNESCO World Heritage Site; one of Asia’s best-preserved trading ports. Ideal for veneer lab days.

What to do in Hoi An:

  • Walk the Ancient Town at sunset — Lantern Street and the Japanese Covered Bridge
  • Eat at the Central Market — local Vietnamese food at AUD 1–3 per dish
  • Tailoring — custom clothing made in 24 hours
  • Cooking class — gentle activity, appropriate from Day 3 (veneer) or Day 5 (implant)
  • An Bang Beach — 4km from the Old Town; quieter than My Khe; beach bars

Hoi An tip: go on a weekday — weekends attract day-tripping Vietnamese tourists and it is significantly more crowded.

Marble Mountains (30 mins by Grab from clinic)

Five marble hills with Buddhist pagodas, caves, and city views. Can walk to the top (some stairs) or take the lift. Appropriate from Day 4 (implant) or Day 3 (veneer). Walking at a comfortable pace; not strenuous. Entry: AUD 2.

Ba Na Hills — Golden Bridge

The cable car ride to the 1,500m Ba Na Hills resort, passing through clouds. The Golden Bridge (hands sculpture) is internationally famous. Full day out — take from Day 5 post-implant, or Day 3 for veneer patients. Book return Grab or join a day tour from Da Nang.

Dragon Bridge (near clinic)

A 666m bridge shaped as a dragon that breathes fire and water on weekend evenings (9pm). Walking distance from central Da Nang; free. Low-effort evening activity suitable from Day 1.

Practical recovery logistics in Da Nang

Getting around

  • Grab — Vietnam’s rideshare app (similar to Uber). Download before arrival. Fares quoted in VND; pay by cash or card. From Picasso to My Khe Beach: AUD 2–3. From Picasso to Hoi An: AUD 6–8.
  • Motorbike taxi (xe ôm) — cheaper but not recommended during recovery; vibration and helmet fit uncomfortable post-surgery.
  • Walking — the clinic area around Đống Đa is walkable. My Khe Beach is too far to walk from the clinic.

SIM card

Buy a Vietnamese SIM at the airport (AUD 5–10 with data) or at any phone shop in Da Nang. Essential for Grab. Recommended: Viettel or Vinaphone for coverage.

Currency

Vietnamese dong (VND). ATMs accept international cards — use Techcombank or BIDV for low-fee withdrawals. Mastercard and Visa accepted at most hotels and mid-range restaurants. Wise card recommended for Australians (no foreign transaction fee).

Medical facilities near Picasso

  • Vinmec International Hospital Da Nang — English-speaking staff; Picasso branch on-site; 10 minutes from main clinic
  • Da Nang General Hospital — public hospital; 5 minutes from Picasso
  • Emergency: call 115 (Vietnam ambulance) — not 000 (which does not work overseas)
