Soft foods after dental treatment in Vietnam: what to eat in Da Nang
What to eat in Da Nang after dental treatment — Vietnamese soft foods perfect for recovery after implants, veneers, or crown preparation, with a day-by-day eating guide.
Vietnam is one of the best countries in the world to recover from dental treatment. Da Nang's cuisine is built around broths, soft noodles, steamed rice, and tropical fruit — exactly what you need after implant surgery or veneer preparation. Pho, cháo (rice congee), and avocado smoothies are available on every street for AUD 1–3, and they are ideal post-treatment foods.
Recovery eating by treatment type
After implant surgery (Days 1–14)
| Days | Diet level | Vietnamese foods |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 (first 24h) | Cold/room-temp only | Sinh tố (no straw), yoghurt, ice cream, lukewarm cháo |
| Days 2–3 | Soft, lukewarm | Cháo, pho broth with soft noodles, hủ tiếu, soft tofu, scrambled eggs |
| Days 4–7 | Soft cooked | Steamed fish with soft rice, com binh dan (rice plate with egg), bánh canh noodle soup |
| Days 8–14 | Normal minus crunchy | All of the above plus soft meat; avoid biting on implant site |
After veneer preparation (temporaries phase, Days 3–10)
Temperature sensitivity is common; extreme hot/cold may cause discomfort. Otherwise eat normally with the exceptions below:
Avoid during temporary phase:
- Very sticky: toffee, caramel, chewing gum
- Very hard: baguette crust, hard coconut candy
- Biting into whole hard fruit: apple, pear (slice instead)
Safe for the entire trip (including temporary phase):
- All noodle soups
- Rice dishes
- Steamed and braised protein
- Ripe fruit (mango, banana, papaya, longan)
- Dairy: yoghurt, ice cream
After crown preparation or root canal treatment
Similar to veneer temporary phase — soft foods preferred for the first 48 hours; then normal eating except for very hard or very crunchy foods.
The best Vietnamese soft foods for dental recovery
Cháo (rice congee) — the gold standard
Smooth, porridge-like rice soup. Available at every market and street stall from 6am. Plain (cháo trắng) or with fish (cháo cá), chicken (cháo gà), or pork. Costs AUD 1–2 per bowl. Add ginger for anti-inflammatory benefit. Avoids all chewing. Suitable from Day 1 post-surgery (lukewarm).
Phở (pho noodle soup)
Vietnam’s most famous dish. Soft rice noodles in beef or chicken broth. Order: phở gà (chicken, softer meat) rather than phở bò with tendon or tripe. Ask for well-cooked noodles. Suitable from Day 2.
Hủ tiếu (clear noodle soup)
Thinner, softer noodles than pho. Especially popular in southern Vietnam. Broth-based; customisable protein. Suitable from Day 2.
Bánh canh (thick noodle soup)
Udon-style thick noodles in a viscous broth — very soft and filling. Picasso’s Da Nang branch is near several bánh canh stalls. Suitable from Day 2.
Steamed fish with rice (cá hấp)
Any restaurant or market stall serving cơm bình dân (local rice plate) will have steamed fish. Flakes apart with no chewing pressure. With soft-cooked white rice. Suitable from Day 3.
Sinh tố (fresh fruit smoothies)
Blended fresh fruit, sometimes with condensed milk. Available at smoothie stalls throughout My Khe Beach area: banana (chuối), papaya (đu đủ), avocado (bơ), mango (xoài). Prices AUD 1–2. Drink from cup — no straw after implant surgery.
Steamed tofu dishes (đậu phụ hấp)
Silken tofu is one of the softest foods available. Served braised with light sauce in any Vietnamese restaurant. Very suitable for the early recovery period.
Vietnamese yoghurt (sữa chua)
Thicker and tangier than Australian yoghurt. Available at every Co.op Mart and Lotte Mart in Da Nang. Excellent cold food for Day 1 post-surgery. Popular brands: Vinamilk, TH True Milk.
Where to eat in Da Nang during recovery
Near Picasso Đống Đa (main clinic)
- Bà Dương — cháo cá (fish congee); Da Nang’s best-known traditional congee restaurant; 5 minutes by Grab
- Local com binh dan stalls — rice plate restaurants on any side street; steamed fish, soft egg, soft tofu
- My Khe Beach restaurants — fresh seafood, grilled and steamed; excellent for Days 4+
Supermarkets for recovery essentials
- Lotte Mart (Hai Chau district) — Vietnamese yoghurt, soft bread, protein drinks, ice cream
- Co.op Mart — full range; baby food pouches (excellent for Day 1 when eating is very restricted)
- FamilyMart / Circle K — 24-hour; yoghurt, ice cream, packaged soft foods
Hoi An (during lab fabrication days)
If you take the Grab to Hoi An during veneer lab days, soft food options include:
- White Rose dumplings (bánh bao vac) — soft, steamed, Da Nang’s specialty
- Cao lầu with soft noodles (avoid the crispy croutons on top)
- Banh mi Phuong — fine during temporary phase if you eat the soft filling only
Foods to avoid throughout treatment
| Food | Why to avoid |
|---|---|
| Bánh mì (crust) | Hard bread crust — too hard during recovery |
| Bún bò Huế with tendon | Very chewy; requires lateral jaw pressure |
| Raw beansprouts | Crunchy; wash wound area |
| Peanuts and whole nuts | Hard; require cracking with posterior teeth |
| Hard coconut candy (kẹo dừa) | Extremely sticky and hard |
| Sugarcane juice (with straw) | No straws for 72h post-implant |
| Very spicy chilli sauces | May irritate healing tissue |
